Adventure Activities

(half and/or full-days)

Bike riding in the Valley of Death

Choose from a selection of adventure activities - from cycle rides around San Pedro, the Pukaka and Catarpe (with Inca ruins), sandboarding in the Death Valley and the Cordillera del Sal, to mountain climbing for all levels, including Cerro Toco, with view of there countries - Chile, Bolivia and Argentina.

Bike Ride - Death Valley

Recommended bike ride up the Valle de la Muerte (Valley of Death), also known as La Garganta del Diablo ('throat of the Devil') to locals, a narrow route between hills with a winding dirt road bordered by vertical cliffs and the valley of the Rio Ibáñez, where you can experience the silence of the Cordillera del Sal and witness the strange erosive nature of its rock formations - created by the erosion of its sedimentary layers, exposing calcareous quartz pieces and lines of chalk.

The sand dunes here provide an opportunity for another adventure activity, sandboarding - see below for more information.

Meeting with the main road from Calama, it is a short trip to a popular mirrador (viewpoint) over the northern edge of the Valle de la Luna, and return to San Pedro via tar road with many other spectacular viewpoints.

The route includes uphill sections, and sections with thick sand, which it is recommended to walk.

Bike Ride - Lagunas Cejar

Located 18 kilometers from San Pedro, on the Salar de Atacama the Lagunas Cejar comprise 3 seperate lagoons, one of which is small and safe to bathe - giving an experience of floating in highly salaine water.

Although mostly on the level, the route can be difficut because of sand and wind, and the risk of punctures. Best undertaken in the morning.
